Tues 2/19

If your child has lower test scores, please encourage ACTIVE studying, not “looking it over”. This can dramatically increase performance. I can’t emphasize enough the importance of completing all homework thoughtfully…not rushing through it just to get it done. Thank you. Mrs. Taylor

Study Tips

Here are some of my favorite study tips–start early:

  • Turn the objectives or What you will learn into “Can I….” questions to check for understanding.
  • Always use Previewing Technique for reading assignments and any worksheets!
  • Preview workbook pages before reading the section and “take notes” by filling in the science workbook pages.
  • Use the 2/3,1/3 method for definitions (modeled in class)
  • Use index cards to create vocab study cards. Use them to make a written quiz for yourself; First put word side up and write the definitions. Then put definitions side up and retest the opposite way.

UPCOMING TESTS/Projects: 6,7,8 Spelling & Voc Less 16 Fri 2/22

Opening night PowerPoint

Thank you in advance for viewing this slide program if you have not seen it–it explains my partnership with parents and the expectations for teacher, parent, and student. There are notes in the notes section that reflect the talk that evening.

Homeroom:

VOCAB / SPELLING/ GR 6, 7 , & 8

Grades 6,7,8: Lesson 16 due Friday Feb 15 Spelling Test Friday Feb 22nd Extra words:covertness suppression

Gr 6 Sci – Read sect 3 Workbook sect 3 pp 156-158 Due Thurs We have started our mini Space reports. Please use NASA.gov first for info. If you any other site, please record the webpage info. You may begin looking for 4-6 pictures related to your project and put them on your flash drive. By Tuesday you are to have all bullet points ready to share with your partner, all pictures available, websites recorded. You may develop a powerpoint slide (one slide!) as your background with title and a picture or two to propose to your group. Items need to be on a flashdrive. IF NO OTHER OPTION for flashdrive, you may put on a google doc and share with me at taylort@sjshollywood.org or email a doc to me. I will not have time to transfer every student’s work so please try to provide your own f;lashdrive. We have had ample time for students to collect info in our 2 class periods in the computer lab but students may need to compile it to the flashdrive it at home.

Gr 7 Sci IF you did not finish CW problem set, do for HW

Gr 8 Science: Finish calculations, graph, and questions for lab.Due next class.

Extra Credit opportunity: Use the info on the timeline handout. Create a bar graph for the calculations. Time on the vertical axis, a bar for each type of transportation. Use top speed of TGV for that vehicle. Be sure to follow all my criteria for a well constructed graph.

Next, write an essay. An  essay is not simply 2 sentences answering the prompt questions, but rather several paragraphs on the topic inspired by the prompts and the work we have done this week in class. It must have a proper opening, body, and closing. It must be typed, 12 point font, double spaced.

Prompts: Consider the many ways that transportation advances have influenced the various facets of peoples lives as these technologies emerged. Some people would call this progress and some people think all progress is good. How would you respond to these ideas? This is due in the red bin on Thursday 2/21 by 8:05 am.
