First Marking Period in Art: The “isms” of Art History

Hello avid, adventurous, awesome artists! This first marking period we will be talking about the “isms” in art. The what??? I mean Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Cubism ~ those “isms”! We started talking right away about Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, Edvard Munch’s The Scream, Pablo Picasso’s Weeping Woman and Salvador Dali’s The Persistence of Memory. We begin our studies with color theory also refreshing, reviewing and renewing our strength in the knowledge of the Color Wheel with vocabulary like Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Colors. Students are also learning about the artist Piet Mondrian who was influenced by cubism but focused on a minimalist style, embracing the beginnings of art with primary colors and geometric shapes. Wow! I can’t wait to see how creative you can be.
